About Me

My name is Kyle Evered, I’m a historical geographer at Michigan State University, & my research & instructional interests concern matters in cultural & political geography, geographies of health & well being, & cultural/political ecology & environmental histories. Most of my writing & teaching deals with issues that involve these topical interests as found in Turkey &, more generally, the northern Middle East & the post-socialist states of Eurasia. In the past, I also studied (& continue to do a little work involving) Latin America & the Caribbean.

Research

I have a number of research interests & related projects, & I explain how these fit together in greater detail on my research page. Briefly, these interests include historical & contemporary geographies of:
  • identity-place inter-relationships (e.g., nationalism & territoriality, cultural dimensions of regionalization, & the varied uses of built &/or natural landscapes in identity construction & in ideological programs)
  • public health, disease, & demographic geopolitics
  • cultural/political ecologies of agro-food systems in rural Turkey (with emphasis on crops like poppies, roses, & anise, home gardens, & dairy production)
  • development, modernity, & environment
  • opium poppies (their geopolitics & political ecologies)
  • the US’ presence in the Middle East & North Africa
  • imperialism & empire
